What can Lloyd Kaufman and Troma Entertainment tell us about the slasher subgenre? Troma produced and distributed such films as Mother's Day (1980) and Graduation Day (1981) in the early eighties, of course, and more recently Slashening: The Final Beginning (2020). But, besides a consideration of these specific films, and Troma's trademark SFX, the breadth of any conversation might seem limited. Our first industry panel at The Slasher Studies Summer Camp, Dr Johnny Walker in conversation with Lloyd Kaufman, presses this immediate assumption by reflecting on Kaufman's early career in New York City, where the landscape of independent film production and distribution was radically reformed by the so-called "New Hollywood" of the seventies and early eighties. What can Kaufman's first-hand experiences tell us about independent film production and distribution during a period in Hollywood that not only led to the disruptive creation of Troma Entertainment but, indeed, the first teen slasher film cycle (1978-1981)? How do they relate? What do Kaufman's first-hand experiences tell us about the regional specificity of independent film production and distribution in New York City during the period? How do these experiences change the rigid definition of such independent film practices as "North American"? How did Hollywood and the popularity of the horror genre, the slasher subgenre in particular, proceed to influence Kaufman and Troma into the eighties and beyond?
Lloyd Kaufman, co-founder of Troma Entertainment, joins The Slasher Studies Summer Camp as Guest of Honour on Saturday 14 August.
